Tug Pegasus, launched as the S.O. Co. No. 16 in 1907, served Standard Oil Company in New York Harbor, docking ships, towing barges and working as an auxiliary fire boat. Operated by Standard Oil through both the World Wars, the S.O. Co. No. 16 served in the troop embarkation activity in New York Harbor. She became Esso Tug No. 1 in 1946 when Standard Oil Company split up their holding in New York and New Jersey. She was later sold to McAllister Towing and Transportation, where she was “dieselized” in 1953 and became the John E. McAllister. Hepburn Marine Towing bought her in 1987 and ran her as the Pegasus for the last 10 years of her 90-year service in the towing industry. Much of the tug’s 90 yeas of service was general harbor towing: ship docking, bunkering and moving oil barges- most of this in New York Harbor.

Retired from commercial life in 1997, tug Pegasus was donated to the non-profit Tug Pegasus Preservation Project. Under that organization’s stewardship the tug has undergone a massive, multi-year restoration. Today she retains many of her original features: a finely molded hull; a deckhouse with finishes and fittings of the period, including quarter-sawn raised oak paneling throughout. Now, nearing the completion of a five-year top-to-bottom restoration, Tug Pegasus Preservation Project is poised to expand  programming and public access opportunities.
