In 2005, the New York State Museum, with the assistance of the Canal Society of New York State, the New York State Canal Corporation, the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the National Park Service's Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor Commission, and a number of other public and private agencies, began the Day Peckinpaugh's transformation into a mobile floating museum and classroom that will educate the public about the State's cultural and natural resources along the canal system, its history and heritage. In commercial service until 1994, the Day Peckinpaugh was the first vessel specifically designed for the dimensions of the New York State Barge Canal and the last of its kind remaining afloat.  The Day Peckinpaugh will be home-ported at historic Matton Shipyard in Cohoes, NY, and will travel the inland waterways of New York each year telling the compelling story of New York's Canals and other waterways, and serving as an enduring symbol of the Empire State's unparalleled legacy of enterprise, ingenuity, and economic ascendancy.
