The Urger was built at the Johnson Brothers Shipyard in Ferrysburg, Michigan. On June 13, 1901, she was christened the Henry J. Dornbus, after a merchant of local fame and fortune. The Detroit Free Press dubbed her the "finest boat in the local fishing fleet."

The Urger was purchased from Charles F. Avery by the Department of Public Works (now the NYS Department of Transportation) and it entered the State Canal fleet in 1922 where it served for nearly 65 years hauling machinery, dredges and scows on the Canal.

Today the Urger serves as an ambassador to the New York State Canal System. Its chief mission is to educate children and adults about the pivotal role the Canals played in the State's economic and social development. In 2001, the Urger was designated on the State and National Registers of Historic Places.
