11'3"Lilac is a 1933 steam-powered lighthouse tender.  Built for the U.S. Lighthouse Service, she became a U.S. Coast Guard ship in 1939.  When decommissioned in 1972, she was the last steam-powered vessel in the Coast Guard fleet.  She is being restored to operating condition by the non-profit Lilac Preservation Project.

While undergoing restoration Lilac is providing maritime-themed public programming that ranges from environmental studies to cultural events.  Lilac hosts fish traps for the River Project to show schoolchildren what lies beneath the surface of the Hudson.  In 2009, Lilac hosted a number of performances including the one-man drama, The Report of My Death, based on the writings of Mark Twain and starring veteran actor Michael Graves. For 2010's City of Water Day, Lilac joined the retired oil tanker Mary A. Whalen for a day of activities that included ship tours and an exhibit of maritime-themed photographs.
